Terra Personas is D.O. Montsant
The areas in this
DO take the form of a ring, with the majority of the
territory falling within the comarca (local district) of El Priorat, but some of the lands of the Ribera del Ebro corresponding to DO Montsant, which is defined as a modern designation of origin with a long tradition in the production of red wine.
territory falling within the comarca (local district) of El Priorat, but some of the lands of the Ribera del Ebro corresponding to DO Montsant, which is defined as a modern designation of origin with a long tradition in the production of red wine.
The climate here is Mediterranean
with continental influences. Rainfall is very limited and there are
sharp oscillations in temperature, although the southern part is a little
warmer. On the periphery of the DO, there are compact lands with
calcareous soils, on stony fluvial terraces, but which have a low water
holding capacity. In some parts of Cornudella and Falset, we find the
slate-based soils known locally as “llicorelles”, which are poor in
organic matter.
The vines exhibit low performance, an aspect that
defines wine-making
in this area and which makes them highly prized. The red wines, which
are most important in quantity, are mainly made from Grenache and
Carignan and typical local DO varieties such as Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet, which are used in small percentages in coupages. DO Montsant is also known for its young red wines. White wines, which are increasingly present in this DO, are obtained from the Macabeu and White Grenache grape varieties. Chardonnay, Muscat, Parellada and Pansal all have a token presence in DO Montsant where they are used in blends. This DO also produces rosés and liquors, with the latter forming part of the deeply rooted tradition of this winemaking area.

carinena harvest 2016
Last week we have finishing the harvest of the Carinena and Cabernet sauvignon.
Just before the rain last friday!
A normal year for the carinena, a bit less sugars as usual, but that is not a problem, than the crianca wines will have less alcolhol. In stead of the 14 to 15 % range we can go probably to the 14.0 % max.

Wine behind the label
Wine behind the label
The ultimate guide to the world’s leading wine producers and their wines.
Terra Personas is on page 1232;
Terra Personas (Montsant) www.terrapersonas.com
Persoon family Apartado 96, 43730 Falset (Cataluña)
Tel: 662 214291
A small range of bright, forward and immediately approachable wines is produced here.
There is a rosado as well as the nutty, lightly aromatic white and two reds. The bodega is owned by the Dutch Persoon family and there has been winegrowing input from Scottish consultant Norrel Robertson MW, who is based in Calatayud.
The vineyard consists of 10 ha which are protected by the Montsant mountains and planted at around 400 metres altitude. The Blanco from Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo is part tank fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures, its Garnacha Blanca component in small oak.
Of the two reds the Terra Vermella (Carinena, Garnacha, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon) is more approachable and fruit forward.
The Terra Negra is more complex, the influence of around 80% of old Cariñena in the blend with Garnacha and Syrah is immediately apparent on tasting.
Recommended Reds:
Montsant Terra Negra ★★★ £C
Montsant Terra Vermella ★★✩ £B
Recommended Whites:

The council of the Priorat = Unesco?
Catalan wine producers in Spain are pushing ahead with a bid to have Priorat recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
http://www.candidaturapriorat.org
The campaign, which has been endorsed by the government of Catalonia, aims to protect a landscape that has generated an economy based on wine and olive oil production and wine tourism.
Among the most vertiginous wine regions in Europe, Priorat is home to deep-rooted vines grown on the unusual llicorella slate soil near Tarragona. Producers want the region to be listed as a ‘mountainous, Mediterranean agricultural and cultural landscape’ by UNESCO.
Rachel Ritchie, liaison officer of Priorat wine council’s Espai Priorat event, said World Heritage status would help protect Priorat’s non-terraced hillside vineyards, known as ‘costers’.Producers claim UNESCO’s global reach would help raise awareness of the values of Priorat’s landscape and cultural heritage.
The campaign for Priorat follows the inclusion of the Alto Douro wine region in Portugal as a World Heritage Site in 2001. More recently, St Emilion in Bordeaux and Barolo vineyards in Piedmonthave made the list.
The Priorat area is home to both Priorat and DO Montsant wine regions and an olive oil DOP. Siurana. Campaigners now have to present a final dossier to the Spanish government, which would then take responsibility for pushing Priorat’s case on the international stage.
